United States: The United States government has issued a firm advisory to individuals aged 60 and above: pause before receiving the chikungunya vaccine. This cautionary measure arrives as national health watchdogs delve into the emergence of potential, serious adverse effects tied to the shot. 

Late last week, both the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released coordinated bulletins centered around the Ixchiq vaccine, manufactured by Valneva. Initially recommended for globe-trotting adults bound for regions grappling with the chikungunya virus, Ixchiq deploys a live, attenuated form of the virus to stir the immune system into action. 

Chikungunya, transmitted via mosquito vectors, is notorious for provoking excruciating joint inflammation and fever. Although cases in the US remain sparse—roughly 100 to 200 reports annually, mostly imported by returning travelers—the risk has spurred preventive vaccination efforts, according to Newsweek.  

However, red flags have been raised. Six individuals, all over the age of 65 and largely managing preexisting health complications, manifested grave neurological or cardiovascular symptoms within days of receiving the immunization. Over a dozen other unsettling episodes have surfaced worldwide, prompting a reassessment of the vaccine’s safety profile.

Reacting to these developments, the CDC’s advisory panel has advocated for an interim precautionary statement for those 65 and older, signaling a potential vulnerability in this age group. Simultaneously, European regulatory bodies have commenced their own scrutiny of the vaccine’s post-marketing safety signals. 

In tandem with this precaution, the advisory council has suggested the greenlighting of a secondary vaccine, Vimkunya, developed by Bavarian Nordic. This alternative may be made available to travelers aged 12 and older heading to locales undergoing chikungunya flare-ups. As of now, the CDC has yet to confirm whether this recommendation will be implemented. 

Where Is Chikungunya a Risk? 

Chikungunya predominantly proliferates in regions saturated with Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes—the same culprits behind dengue and Zika transmissions. In Africa, the virus holds endemic status in swaths of Central and West Africa, particularly across Nigeria, Senegal, Kenya, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. 

In Asia, nations including India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Myanmar, and the Philippines have witnessed sweeping outbreaks. The Americas, too, have endured turbulent waves of infection, especially throughout the Caribbean islands—Puerto Rico, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic—and across Central and South American territories like Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, and Honduras. Mexico has tallied substantial case numbers as well, as reported by Newsweek.  

Domestically, the United States has not endured any entrenched local transmission; however, travel-associated cases crop up frequently, particularly in states like Florida and Texas, where mosquito populations could, in theory, allow the virus to take root. 

Across the Pacific, outbreaks have unfolded in island nations such as Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and the Solomon Islands, underscoring the virus’s expansive footprint.

Exercise Still Helps—but Can’t Fully Compensate 

Interestingly, the body’s reaction to exercise wasn’t fully dulled by sleep loss. Key beneficial proteins still rose after workouts, regardless of how much rest participants had the night before. This suggests that even when running on fumes, physical activity can offer some protection. 

However, Cedernaes added a cautionary note: prior findings show that mixing exercise with sleep loss might slightly overburden the heart’s muscle cells. “Yes, movement can patch over some of sleep’s damage. But it’s no replacement. Sleep’s own functions are irreplaceable,” he emphasized.

A mysterious neurological illness once believed to be emerging in New Brunswick, Canada, has come under scrutiny following new findings.  

Half a dozen years prior, Dr. Alier Marrero, a neurologist nestled in Canada’s maritime province of New Brunswick, encountered an unusual string of patients. 

 These individuals, he claimed, exhibited confounding neurological symptoms: tactile hallucinations, intense body spasms, memory lapses that escalated with haste, and the haunting impression of insects beneath their skin.  

None of these strange experiences quite mirrored any pre-documented brain disorder. What emerged was not a diagnosis, but a baffling quandary. 

Established Diagnoses Cast Doubt on the Enigma 

However, as the years unfolded, other neurological specialists stepped in to decode the riddle. Their investigations didn’t point to a new affliction. Instead, they aligned with known cerebral conditions—Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and malignancies. A fresh inquiry, unveiled in JAMA Neurology, reaffirms this direction, asserting the likelihood of an unidentified illness as minuscule, roughly one in a million, according to NBC News.  

In their study, 25 individuals previously connected to the alleged cluster were reevaluated. Eleven had succumbed, allowing for full post-mortem examinations, while the remaining 14 underwent cognitive scrutiny and neurological vetting. Every one of them, researchers concluded, was suffering from already documented disorders: traumatic brain injuries, post-concussive syndromes, or neurodegenerative diseases long known to medicine. 

“We found sound, evidence-based explanations in each and every instance,” remarked Dr. Anthony Lang, one of the paper’s co-authors and a leading figure at the Krembil Brain Institute. 

Doubt and Distrust Persist 

Yet this scientific clarity hasn’t silenced the growing undercurrent of skepticism. Many families remain tethered to the belief that something novel is unfolding—something modern diagnostics have yet to catch. According to the researchers, dozens rebuffed second evaluations altogether, and many more ignored communication attempts. Such hesitancy, they say, stems from eroding faith in healthcare systems and the viral churn of misinformation across digital platforms. 

“These were misread cases that ballooned into misinformation—and the physician at the helm still urges belief in a phantom ailment,” said Lang, as per NBC News. 

Dr. Marrero firmly opposed the study’s assertions. “I strongly contest the conclusions drawn. The methodologies and presented data leave numerous unanswered questions,” he voiced. “Our communities and patients, I believe, resonate with this grave concern.” 

A Contested Narrative 

Dr. Valerie Sim, a neurology scholar at the University of Alberta, uninvolved in the investigation, noted the disorder’s diagnostic vagueness. “The descriptions are so nebulous, so broad, that nearly anyone might fit the label,” she observed. “Tragically, what these patients do share is one common element—Dr. Marrero. Once others assessed them, diagnoses shifted to established maladies.” 

Dr. James Mastrianni, from the University of Chicago, echoed the need for seasoned expertise. “This study is a testimony to the value of a refined second opinion,” he said. 

Political Echoes and Lingering Questions 

The illness first drew official attention in 2021. Even after a formal probe concluded, most cases reflected known conditions, and doubt persisted. In late 2023, Premier Susan Holt pressed the province’s health authority to reignite scientific scrutiny into what she termed a “mystery brain disease.” 

“New Brunswickers have a right to clarity,” Holt affirmed. “We need to uncover what’s afflicting our people,” according to NBC News.  

Patient advocates now suggest environmental hazards may be instigators. Blood and urine analyses, they argue, contain abnormal compounds—heavy metals, uncommon antibodies, and pesticide traces—which should not be dismissed. 

“It’s not about ruling out alternative diagnoses,” insisted activist Kat Lanteigne. “It’s about identifying what triggered these neurodegenerative spirals.” 

Health Authorities Hold Ground 

New Brunswick’s chief medical officer, Dr. Yves Léger, emphasized that his department would continue its own probe. “The new data does not derail our commitment to pursue clarity on these undiagnosed neurological anomalies,” he stated. 

So far, 222 reports have been flagged as part of the mysterious pattern. 

Dr. Marrero, maintaining his position, says he has screened over 500 patients tied to the cluster. He claims to have compiled a considerable dossier of environmental exposures and rare immune responses in many of them. 

But Lang cautioned against overinterpretation: “The mere presence of substances in biological samples doesn’t confirm causality. You can’t just launch a wide-net search, stumble upon anomalies, and claim correlation.” 

Complexity of Brain Disorders Clouds Certainty 

Experts who are disconnected from the New Brunswick conundrum highlight several reasons behind the ongoing discord. They explain that diagnosing brain diseases can be slow and riddled with nuance. Disorders like Alzheimer’s may unfold differently in every individual and often elude immediate classification. 

“You need a full, detailed storyline from those close to the patient to truly understand dementia’s arc,” said Dr. Kimberly O’Neill of NYU Langone Health. “It’s rarely straightforward.” 

One standout symptom in the suspected cluster was fast-advancing memory loss. But early cognitive shifts can go unnoticed by families, making progression seem sudden, Dr. Mastrianni pointed out. 

As symptoms worsen, people often cling to the first diagnosis they receive, unwilling to abandon the initial explanation, even when new evidence emerges. 

“This pattern is common,” said Dr. Sim. “Patients gravitate toward a diagnosis that validates their experience. That’s exactly what’s unfolding here.” 

“The misjudgments here,” she concluded, “are deeply unfortunate. People may be denied therapies and support they urgently need.”
